The Canadian Chinese Orchestra Senior Music Program 2024-2025

Our Programs

The seniors program of the Canadian Chinese Orchestra has had several positive impacts on the community it serves:

  1. Strengthened Cultural Connections: By exposing seniors to traditional Chinese music and cultural practices, the program helps preserve cultural heritage and fosters a sense of identity and belonging. This connection to cultural roots can be particularly meaningful for older adults who may feel disconnected from their heritage.
  2. Enhanced Social Engagement: The program creates a social hub where seniors can meet and interact with peers, leading to increased socialization and reduced feelings of loneliness. This sense of community and companionship is crucial for improving mental and emotional health among older adults.
  3. Improved Mental and Emotional Well-Being: Participation in musical activities has been shown to have therapeutic benefits. For seniors, engaging with music can stimulate cognitive functions, provide emotional relief, and enhance overall mood. The structured environment of the program offers a sense of purpose and achievement.
  4. Fostered Artistic Growth: Seniors who participate in the program have opportunities to develop or refine their musical skills, which can be a source of personal satisfaction and pride. This creative engagement can also be a rewarding and fulfilling aspect of their lives.
  5. Increased Community Awareness: The program helps raise awareness about the value of arts and cultural programs for seniors, encouraging broader community support for similar initiatives. It highlights the importance of integrating arts into elder care and community services.

Overall, the seniors program contributes to a more vibrant and supportive community by promoting cultural appreciation, social interaction, and personal enrichment.

Our Teachers

Lilian Yang, Pipa/Zhongruan Instructor

The pipa is a pear-shaped traditional Chinese instrument. It can play not only the traditional Chinese repertoire but also fits into many genres. Additionally, practicing the pipa helps improve your finger dexterity, which benefits brain health. I believe you will have a fun time in the pipa class, meet new friends, and share your music with them.

Dr. Di Zhang, Yangqin Instructor

“Music is not just an art form; it’s a journey that enriches our lives in countless ways. Learning music, especially as we age, offers incredible benefits. It sharpens our cognitive skills, keeps our minds active, and even enhances memory. But beyond the mental and physical benefits, music speaks to the core of who we are. It connects us with our emotions, our culture, and with one another. It is never too late to start learning or deepening your understanding of music. Whether you are a seasoned musician or just starting, every note you play is an expression of who you are. Let’s enjoy this journey together, and let the music bring out the best in us.”

Lina Cao, Guzheng Instructor

“Learning the guzheng, a traditional Chinese musical instrument, holds significant value for elderly individuals. Engaging in guzheng practice helps improve hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity, which can be beneficial in maintaining joint flexibility and preventing stiffness. Additionally, by participating in group activities, elderly individuals can expand their social networks, reducing feelings of loneliness and enriching their overall quality of life.”

Amely Zhou, Erhu Instructor

“Our senior music program is all about bringing the joy of music to our elder community. Through engaging performances and interactive sessions, we aim to enrich their lives, fostering connection, creativity, and well-being. It’s incredible to see how music can uplift and support our seniors, offering them both emotional and mental well-being.”

Nicole Liang, Erhu Instructor
