In honour of the 5th anniversary, the Canadian Chinese Orchestra is excited to present to you our annual concert, held on June 19th, 2021 at 7:30PM EST! Streamed live on Youtube, guests are invited to join us to celebrate the exquisiteness of Chinese culture, exploring the themes of music, passion, and destiny. The concert features a careful selection of traditional and contemporary repertoire. From small ensemble to orchestral music, this concert is prepared through virtual activities. To celebrate the 5th year anniversary, CCO has invited orchestras from around the globe to join the performance. Registration will be entirely free this year. With a suggested donation amount of $20, CCO is fundraising for the cause of Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto’s “One Meal at a Time” program.

The Canadian Chinese Orchestra is a non-profit organization devoted to bringing talented individuals together to achieve excellence in performing Chinese instrumental music. Led by conductor and artistic director Amely Zhou, the group has been invited to perform at various prestigious venues in the past, including participation in an annual music tour in different cities of China. Currently, the Canadian Chinese Orchestra prides itself on being the fastest growing orchestra in the GTA, continuing to reach a diverse range of audience to join in on appreciating the beauty and intricacy of Chinese music.

This concert will feature a diverse selection of pieces. Contemporary works by Matthew Van Driel, Intersections (交會) takes inspiration from Song Dong’s Communal Courtyard. The ideas in this piece continue to change, influence, and fight with one another, creating both harmonies and dissonances. Whiteout (飄白) follows the story of a winter storm, symbolizing that there is a sense of beauty in the uniformity, scope and power of the storm. Dance of the Yao People () is one of the most well-known Chinese orchestral music. Originally written for the Symphony Orchestra by Liu Tieshan and Mao Yuan, this piece is inspired by the Yao tribe from their long drum dance performed in festival celebrations. Amongst all, the Wild Goose (鸿雁) is the highlight of our programs as it will be joined by members from the Millennium Music Workshop, the Hong Kong Juvenile Youth Chinese Orchestra, the Calgary Chinese Orchestra, the Yips Strings Ensemble, the Edmonton Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra, and the Toronto Chinese Orchestra. This work is an arrangement of a Mongolian song by Ying Jiang (姜莹). Other than the music programs, we also have a lucky draw where we give out free gifts for our audiences.

Registration for this event will begin on May 10th. On behalf of the Canadian Chinese Orchestra and the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, we thank you all for your support to help us build a more culturally-aware and diverse community! You can donate by sending us an e-transfer to donate@canadianchineseorchestra.com or by supporting our Gofundme page. All proceeds after expenses will be donated to the “One Meal at a Time” program to support our seniors in the low-income communities.
