Celebrate the Lunar New Year with the Canadian Chinese Orchestra’s New Year Concert 2025
Toronto, ON — Usher in the Year of the Snake with a spectacular celebration of music and culture at the Canadian Chinese Orchestra’s Lunar New Year Concert 2025! Taking place on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, at 4:00 PM at The Salvation Army Yorkminster Citadel, this event promises to be a feast for the senses and a joyous way to welcome the new year.
Under the artistic direction of Amely Zhou (周嘉丽), and featuring Associate Conductor Mike Liu (刘卓冲) and Guest Conductor Dr. Matthew Poon, the concert showcases a stunning blend of traditional and contemporary Chinese music. A highlight of the program is the world premiere of Movement Three (Suite Three), an original composition by Dr. Matthew Poon. This evocative work adds a modern touch to the evening’s lineup, underscoring the orchestra’s commitment to innovation within the framework of tradition.
The program also features the grand and celebratory Festival in Changan (⻓安社⽕), a powerful piece that evokes the festive spirit of ancient Chinese gatherings. Alongside these orchestral masterpieces are solo performances, including Guzheng Soloist Tricia Zhang (张舒然) performing the dramatic and moving Set the Storm (定⻛波), and Suona Soloist Herman Li (李惠明), whose vibrant rendition of 999 Roses (九百九⼗九朵玫瑰) promises to be a highlight of the evening.
Rounding out the evening is a selection of international favorites in the World Medley (世界⾦曲) and the beautifully evocative Summer (夏). Together, these pieces create a rich and diverse program that celebrates both Chinese heritage and global musical traditions, offering something for every listener to enjoy.
