Canadian Chinese Orchestra presents our first-ever virtual fundraising concert – “CONFLUENCE 融” on October 17, 2020 at 7:00 pm. “Confluence” means merging and rejoining, representing the welcoming and inclusive theme of the concert as well as the aim of reuniting through these distant times.
Ticket raffle will be drawn during the intermission, two lucky audiences will have the chance to receive special gift sets from CCO, and audiences will have an opportunity to ask any Chinese music-related and orchestra-related questions during the Q&A session at the end of the concert. Some of the featured performances includes Autumn Moon over a Calm Lake (平湖秋月), The Ballad of Lan Huahua (兰花花叙事曲), and the Detective Conan Theme Song. Members who will be playing these songs will be Dolores Chung, Jade Fang and Kimberly, and Sky Yang, respectively.
Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake (平湖秋月) performed by Dolores Chung, Guzheng (CPCO)
Canadian Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra member , Dolores Chung, will bring us a beautiful Guzheng piece – Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake. Dolores, who is very passionate about Chinese music, has learned to play various Chinese traditional instruments including Guzheng, Zhongruan, and Erhu. “Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake” is also known as “Drunk Peace”, is a masterpiece of Guangdong music master Lu Wencheng. It is also said that it was developed from the “Huan Song” in the eight sets of Jiangnan Sizhu. This song is widely circulated in Cantonese opera music.
The Ballad of Lan Huahua (兰花花叙事曲) performed by Jade Fang, Erhu (CYCO)
Canadian Youth Chinese Orchestra’s Gaohu Player, Jade Fang will be performing a famous Erhu piece called “The Ballad of Lan Huahua”. Jade has played Erhu for over 9 years and is familiar with two other instruments in the Hu family, which are Gaohu and Banhu. “The Ballad of Lan Huahua” is an erhu ballad composed in 1981 based on the story of a beautiful, innocent, and simple rural girl, Lan Huahua, and her misfortune in love, it shows Lan Huahua’s strong character in fighting against feudal forces.
“Detective Conan Theme Song” (Arranged by Kimberly and Sky Yang (CYCO)) Erhu and Piano
Cased Closed, also known as Detective Conan, is a famous and popular Japanese detective manga/anime series. Filled with lots of intensity, drive, and heartfelt emotion, the arrangement of Detective Conan’s theme song will take listeners on a fun and exciting journey! This piece has been arranged by Kimberly and Sky Yang, who were able to combine Western and Chinese Instruments to create this piece. What an impressive feat for such young talents!
The concert lasts about one hour and forty minutes. Once you have purchased the tickets, you will receive a link to stream the concert. In the concert, members of both CYCO and CPCO perform traditional Chinese music, contemporary music and rearrangements of popular music. We hope that when everyone is confined to home during the pandemic. Confluence helps everyone reconnect with the spirit of music and celebrating the joy of music making.
All the funds raised in this concert will help Canadian Chinese Orchestra build a more comprehensive scholarship program to educate the younger generations about Chinese music, provide better rehearsal spaces in the near future and fund the orchestra’s instrument inventory. We thank you for your generous support in this difficult time for all the arts organizations.
