North Easterly Wind – A Celebration of Asian Heritage Month 2025

Toronto, ON – May 31, 2025 – The Canadian Chinese Orchestra proudly presents North Easterly Wind, a captivating concert showcasing the rich and vibrant traditions of Chinese orchestral music from Northern China. This special event will take place at The Salvation Army Yorkminster Citadel (1 Lord Seaton Road, North York, ON M2P 2C1) with two performances at 4:00 PM and 7:30 PM.

Under the artistic direction of Amely Zhou, the concert will feature guest conductor Dr. Matthew Poon, associate conductor Mike Liu, and an ensemble of talented musicians performing a dynamic program, including:

• Flying Dragon Leaping Tiger (龙腾虎跃)
• Crying River (江河水)
• Manxiang Capriccio (满乡随想)
• Crescent Moon (月牙五更)
• North Easterly Wind (东北风)

Join us in celebrating Asian Heritage Month through the powerful sounds of traditional Chinese instruments, including the banhu (coconut fiddle), yangqin (hammered dulcimer), paigu (pitched drums), and erhu (two-stringed fiddle). This concert brings to life the spirited melodies and expressive storytelling of Northern China’s musical heritage.

• Dr. Di Zhang – an exceptional performer and expert on the Yangqin (hammered dulcimer)
• Anna Tan – Performing on the rare coconut shell banhu, showcasing its distinctive timbre
